Accounting software is the one category on this site where "choose the boring one your accountant already knows" is genuinely the best advice most of the time. The cost of a tool your accountant has to learn is paid in their hours at their rate, and it will exceed any subscription difference. That said, the tooling around the core ledger is where the interesting launches are, and that is worth browsing.
The categories that produce genuinely useful launches are receipt and expense capture, bank feed reconciliation, tax calculation for digital services, and the bridging tools that connect a business's actual systems to whatever the accountant uses. Expense capture in particular has improved a great deal: photographing a receipt and having it correctly categorised and matched to a bank transaction removes the single most-hated recurring admin task in small business.
Reconciliation quality is what distinguishes good tools from bad, and it comes down to how well the system matches transactions without asking. A tool that correctly matches ninety percent of a month's transactions leaves an hour of work. One that matches sixty leaves a day. This is not visible on a feature list and is very visible after one month of use, which is why the trial period matters here more than elsewhere.
For anyone selling digital products internationally, tax is the part that catches people out, because obligations can arise in a customer's country regardless of where you are. Rules differ by region and by whether the buyer is a business or a consumer, and thresholds change. Tools that handle determination, collection and filing for the places you actually sell are solving a problem that is genuinely difficult to do by hand, and getting it wrong accrues quietly.
A general caution: this subcategory contains software that helps you comply with rules, not advice about what the rules are for your situation. Thresholds, treatments and obligations vary by jurisdiction and by circumstance, and the cost of a wrong assumption compounds. Use the tools, and get a qualified professional to confirm your setup once.
Keep your records exportable and your history intact. Whatever you use, you will eventually need to hand five years of it to someone.
