Email remains the highest-return channel available to small products for a simple structural reason: you own the list. Every other channel is rented from a platform that can change its rules, and periodically does. The tools in this subcategory range from simple broadcast senders to full lifecycle automation, and the right choice depends almost entirely on volume and how much behavioural triggering you actually need.
Deliverability is the thing that matters and the thing least visible on any landing page. An email that is not delivered has no open rate to report, so the metrics you see are calculated on the mail that arrived. The practical levers are authentication — the standard sender records, correctly configured — a clean list, a consistent sending pattern, and ruthless removal of people who never open. Tools that walk you through authentication and warn you about list decay are worth more than ones with better templates.
The single biggest own-goal in this category is sending to addresses that did not ask. Bought lists, scraped addresses, and everyone who ever filled in a form for something unrelated will generate complaints, and complaints affect delivery for the people who did want to hear from you. Confirmed opt-in costs you signups and buys you a list that works.
On automation, the honest position is that most small products need less than they buy. A welcome sequence, a re-engagement message and one behavioural trigger tied to the moment of value in your product will outperform an elaborate branching flow that nobody has reviewed in a year. Complexity in lifecycle email decays badly, because the product changes and the emails do not.
Metrics have shifted underfoot. Open rates became substantially less reliable once mail clients began pre-fetching images on the recipient's behalf, which inflates opens and makes open-based automation misfire. Clicks and downstream actions are the honest measures now, and tools still optimising for open rate are optimising for a number that stopped meaning much.
For launch-adjacent use, an email list is the single most useful asset to arrive at launch day with. See [building an audience before launch](/blog/building-an-audience-before-launch).
