About HR & People

People tooling covers hiring paperwork, onboarding, time off, performance processes, payroll adjacency and the general administration of employing people. It is a category where the software is rarely the problem and the process usually is, which is worth remembering before buying anything.

The highest-return tools for a small company are the ones that remove a recurring irritation with a clear answer. Time-off tracking is the canonical example: a shared spreadsheet works until it does not, and the failure is somebody taking leave they had not accrued or two people covering the same week. A tool that shows balances, routes approvals and puts absences on a shared calendar solves it completely for very little money.

Onboarding tooling is the next most valuable and the most commonly skipped. The first week determines a great deal, and the difference between a new person having accounts, hardware, a written explanation of how things work and a named person to ask, versus discovering all of it by accident, is large and entirely within your control. Tools here are mostly checklists with automation attached, and that is sufficient.

Performance and review software should be approached with more scepticism. These tools encode a philosophy — ratings, calibration, continuous feedback, objectives cascaded from the top — and adopting the tool means adopting the philosophy. If the process is bad, software makes it faster and more formal rather than better. Decide what you want the process to be, then find something that supports it.

The compliance side is genuinely hard and jurisdiction-specific: employment classification, working time rules, mandatory leave, data protection for employee records, and the retention obligations that attach to all of it. Getting classification wrong in particular is expensive and common, especially with contractors across borders. Software helps you execute; it does not tell you what is lawful for your situation, and this is a place to get professional advice once rather than infer from a landing page.

On employee data, remember it is among the most sensitive a company holds. Access controls, retention limits and a real deletion path are requirements rather than features. See [compliance](/categories/compliance) for the broader picture.
