Storefronts
Store platforms and headless commerce.

Be the firstAbout Storefronts
Storefront platforms host the shop itself, and the decision is more consequential than for most software because migrating a store with order history, customer accounts, product URLs and search rankings is a genuine project. Choose as though you will be there for years.
The first fork is hosted platform versus self-managed. Hosted platforms handle infrastructure, security, payment compliance and updates, and charge a subscription plus frequently a transaction percentage. Self-managed options cost less in fees and more in attention, and the attention is not optional — an unpatched store handling payments is a serious liability. For most small merchants the hosted option is correct, and the honest reason is that the alternative's savings evaporate the first time something breaks on a weekend.
Performance is a direct revenue matter here rather than an abstraction. Store pages are frequently opened on phones on poor connections by people with low commitment, and load time correlates with conversion in a way that is well documented. The most common cause of a slow store is not the platform but accumulated third-party scripts — analytics, chat widgets, review embeds, remarketing pixels — each added for a reason and never removed. Audit them periodically.
The app ecosystem is a genuine strength and a genuine trap. Being able to add a feature by installing something is enormously convenient, and a store running fifteen apps has fifteen subscriptions, fifteen sources of script weight and fifteen things that can break during an update. Be deliberate.
Product URLs deserve a thought at setup time, because changing them later costs search visibility unless redirects are handled correctly. A structure that survives reorganising your catalogue is worth ten minutes of planning.
Search and filtering within the store is chronically underinvested and matters enormously once you pass a couple of hundred products. Shoppers who use search convert at much higher rates, and a search that returns nothing for a product you stock is a lost sale you never see.
Own your customer list. Platform accounts are useful; an email list you can export is the asset that survives a platform change. See [email marketing](/categories/email-marketing).
